Many schools and communities are making special plans for this year’s celebration, as the 40th anniversary of the event. Colorado State University is no exception, with several events throughout the course of the week.
Monday’s Cenergy Expo kicked off the week of events, followed by a bike parade, Green University walking tour, a film festival featuring several films including some with sustainability themes, the Earth Day Celebration and Student Sustainability fair. The week will end with the Sustainable Apparel Show.
Student reaction to Earth Day seems to be as diverse as the celebration options. "I think its approaching holiday status in some ways," said Kimberly Ornell, a junior Fine Arts major. "Go to the festival, eat some food, listen to music and make a macaroni necklace. I don’t come away from it thinking I need to make changes in my lifestyle based on what I’ve learned."
"We talk about going green, but it’s really about how do we encourage or discourage being environmentally friendly?" she said. "Companies like New Belgium impact the way we see future businesses, I’d like more info from companies like them. What are cost effective ways to do business in an environmentally responsible way."
